Young couple with kids own this 1990 center colonial home in Clifton, VA. Their lifestyle was more modern and did not agree with the existing kitchen and its cabinetry.
All walls were taken out, bulkhead/soffits were removed. Major piping and electrical had to be relocated.
The powder room backing into kitchen was excessively large and its extra space was not offering much of assistance.
The backyard was the jewel of this property and client wanted more views of that to be exposed into kitchen. There was a bay window currently in breakfast area. Small window above sink area.
We have replicated the breakfast area bay window over the main sink area and enlarges the window by the way of large support beam. Then we have extended the granite counter top into this bay to create more continuation. This allowed more light and more of the beautiful backyard to be seen will seating or eating at large center Island. The existing bay window got built in bench cabinetry made for it for extra storage and seating.
By the way of moving a bearing wall and install support beam, then relocating toilet and sink of powder room we have created a much desired butler area with wine chiller and glass cabinetry for clients entertainment needs.
One of client desires was to incorporate stone walls into this kitchen redesign. We have featured an entire south wall of the kitchen with a contrasting ledger stacked stone and used the same stone as backsplash behind chimney wood hood.
Since the bulkhead where gone we have used all the added space with taller cabinetry done in brushed stroke ivory with pewter glaze covered with a rare honed exotic marble that carried veins of blues that was in the stone walls.
The use of darker blue granite in Island has connected the stone wall and kitchen elements.
We have installed a 5” wide dark Hickory planks to bring a sophisticated but elegant look into this kitchen. The cooking area covered with stove and custom chimney hood feature the east wall beautifully. While the 6”x6” blue porcelain tiles connects the dots. Two big wrought iron black pendent lights over the island along with the rest of recess lighting has given a timeless look to this kitchen. The use of big central island has improved upon the traffic flow that they had to encounter before while offering additional seating and storage space, as well as a clever use of space to give microwave and warming tray to their youngest to use. Clients are static about the outcome and enjoy every minute of their family time in their new kitchen.
