A family of four purchased this single-family home in a new development in South Riding, VA few years back. They have selected to purchase the home with unfinished basement as the builder’s option to give them completed basement was not to their liking.
After settling in for a year, they wanted to take on a task of approaching contractors to finish up their basement. They had a handful of items required to have in this new space: movie theater, wine cellar, full bar, exercise room, full bedroom and bath, a powder room, and a big entertainment space.
They met with our design staff and voiced out their agenda. The challenges started with how the builder has placed plumbing rough in for bathroom which did not go with the new lay-out. The post and bearing walls did not work as well and had to be reconfigured.
We have designed this basement with consideration of using maximum daylight for gaming and entertainment area.
We have used a large-scale porcelain tile throughout the entire basement giving a continuity to this space, complementing the tile with a Ledgestone wrapping all structure columns and accent wall in the bar area.
We implemented a big bar space with mahogany cabinetry, space for bar seating, lots of glass cabinets for liquor and China display and a magnificent lighting.
The left end of this basement was converted to a guest bedroom suite with its own bathroom. Tastefully designed with linear tiles and vertical glass tile accents spruced up this bathroom.
The gaming and conversation area were furnished with built-ins and wainscoting which give an upscale look to this magnificent basement. A new powder room area was built just outside of the exercise room.
We have ordered custom beveled glass doors and interior doors just to uplift this basement space from the rest of the house.
A 6’x8’ wine cellar was built with a custom glass door just few steps away from this stunning bar space.
Behind the staircase, we have implemented a fully-equipped movie theater room furnished with state-of-the-art AV system, surround sound, big screen and a lot more.
Our biggest goal for this space was to carefully (yet softly) coordinate all color schemes to achieve a very airy, open and welcoming entertainment space. By creating two tray ceiling and recess lighting, we have uplifted the use of an unused corner of this basement.
“This has become the jewel of the neighborhood,” she said. As they are looking forward to have a block party and show off this magnificent basement.
