This large kitchen is the result of adding an additional corner to the existing floor plan, by putting on an addition on the back of the home. The original kitchen was in an “L” shape, so we incorporated the additional space from the outside, making it into a rectangle. We added the sliding glass doors in the new addition space, and put in a work desk in that space, as well as the family’s eating area. The island serves as a preparation and serving area, and there is ample counter space in the wrap around space against the wall. We also integrated the color pallette into the rest of the family room by putting the tall cabinets with matching granite tops as a peninsula dividing the family room from the kitchen. This home had been previously remodeled, as is indicated by the main support beam just over the range hood, and we conntected the entire space with the sunroom off of the family room. There is an open traffic flow throughout the three rooms. The homeowners chose professional stainless steel appliances throughout the kitchen, including the dishwasher in the island area. The space is tied together with metallic accent tiles with a grape vine motif, that runs through the backsplash. The light tones of the cabinetry and the hardwood flooring are contrasted with the dark granite countertops. The adjacent family room was also remodeled with drywall replacing the 1970′s dark walnut paneling and ceiling beams, so that all of the space is now much brighter, for a space that is on the back of the home and in perpetual shade.
