2022 PRO Mid Atlantic Remodeler of the Year, Grand Award Residential Addition Under $200,000
- A family of four living in a Sterling suburb single-family home wanted a new addition left to their home.
- Mother-in-law has sold her house and moved in with them.
- They wanted her close by to be able to take care of her. The main level left side addition plans were implemented to create a living quarter for the aging mother-in-law.
- A 16’x 35’ addition with a wrap-around porch, side entrance, and lead walkway was designed to accommodate her needs.
- Planning and permitting this addition was pretty complicated, to say the least.
- We had to remove a few large oak trees to make space for the addition.
- All utilities, such as gas meter, electrical meter, underground communication lines, and exhaust for furnace and water heater, had to be redesigned and relocated to allow adequate space for the new addition.
- This new addition is connected to a set of doors to the main level living space.
- The new home addition featured a new bedroom and full bath with a separate toilet room, walk-in shower, lots of closet space, a separate laundry room, a living space that had a tall vaulted ceiling, two big skylights to allow maximum lights, and 10 ft. walls kitchenette.
- A gas fireplace/stove installed in the living space makes a cozy gathering place surrounded by built-ins.
- A set of 8 ft. sliding glass doors leading to the adjacent covered porch is very welcoming.
- Her eclectic taste in furnishing and accessories was a driving factor in the cabinet color selection. We added a hand-painted ceramic countertop and backsplash along with custom-made wood shelving, which was used to set off the rustic kitchen.
- Rustic beams on the vaulted ceiling complement the wooden floors and the rest of the décor.
- A new dual-zone mechanical system was installed to accommodate the old home and the new addition.
- The stamped concrete lead walk is very inviting and seamlessly ties the two dwellings together.
- We installed a brick front and new siding to blend the two structures together. The new gray tone metal roof compliments the soft white tone painted brick home, bringing out the 1980’s inspired aesthetic.
- “Color is everything,” says the Mother-in-law as she sits on the white wicker rocking chair on the side porch. She’s dressed in a glamorous pink shirt and wearing a bright red lip paired with a cool hat.
- This family is living happily ever after next to each other and the grandkids are grateful for being in each other’s lives.
