In this older home, the kitchen was a small “U” shaped work space with cabinets hanging down and dividing up the room. The hallway to the laundry room behind the kitchen also had the pantry cabinet, so they had to walk around the peninsula to get to it. The hallway was also too narrow. We reconfigured the entire kitchen, moving the walls and widening the rear hallway, while at the same time gaining wall space in the kitchen so we could relocate the refrigerator closer to the work space. On the far wall, we installed the pantry cabinets and a serving area for the dining room just outside the main doorway. We created a small island, which the couple wanted for a combination island and breakfast bar. We used it as a design element and made the breakfast table a semi-circle of granite. We also reconfigured the powder room behind the kitchen in the back hallway, so it matched the look of the kitchen and laundry room.
