For a young growing family, we created this large open kitchen in a space that had been dark and divided. We redesigned the kitchen to eliminate the peninsula and instead put in an island with seating for the kids. We enlarged the window over the sink and made it openable so the wife could communicate with the children playing in the backyard. We installed a cabinet bench in place of an unsightly railing between the breakfast room and the family room where there is a step down, which also gives them more storage. The light palette of colors helps brighten up the rooms and tie them together. In order to avoid a vent hood for the cooking island, we installed a down draft cooktop that vents through the floor. In front of the fan, we designed a custom pull out drawer to utilize all of the space under the cabinetry in the island. There are also custom cabinets on the counter containing drawers for storing small items, as well as glass front cabinets for glassware. The refrigerator and ovens are located together in a bank across from the island. The diagonal floor and backsplash tile helps create interest in this neutral kitchen.
