In a nice home, the kitchen was configured in a U-shape with a peninsula sticking out into the area between the kitchen and the next door family room. We reconfigured the kitchen to have an island instead of a peninsula, and with the taller cabinets, and island storage, they did not lose any space. We also changed the wooden railing between the breakfast area and the family room into a functional counter with cabinet storage on one side. The homeowners like the way it has a finished look on the back side, not just plain paneling like their old peninsula had. The granite tops have a copper sparkle, since the homeowners like copper and use it to cook and decorate with. The refrigerator is paneled to match the rich tones of the cherry cabinetry. The brick cooking area was original, and the homeowners wanted to keep it, so we incorporated the cooktop into it, as well as the double wall ovens.
